The animal you see staring down the camera is an American bison. Often used interchangeably with buffalo, bison are actually native to North America and Europe while buffalo reside in South Asia and Africa (I have been misusing this my entire life).

I photographed this bison at the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve near Pawhuska, Oklahoma. This particular bison had a calf laying a few yards to her right, so I was sure to stay in the car to not disturb either animal. According to the Oklahoma Historical Society, the bison was named the Oklahoma state animal in 1972.
